If you have employees in California , especially in the City of Los Angeles ,  its important to follow the latest pick sick leave rules . There are two main ways to offer sick time: Frontloading (giving a set amount at the start of the year) or Accrual (employees earn hours as the work).

Tip: The accrual method is often better for part-time employees, while frontloading may be easier for full-time teams.

Setting Up Sick Pay on Payroll Software

  1. Go to the Employees tab.
  2. Select PTO.
  3. Click Enable Sick Hours.
  4. Choose your method:
    • Frontload: Add 40 (CA) or 48 (LA) hours at the start of the year.
    • Accrual: Use 0.03333 hours per hour worked
  5. Set the maximum balance (80 CA / 72 LA)
  6. Click Save
